The way home was long but uneventful. Athena strode into her forest the newest slave of Arden following her. She was proud of this one. He was not like the last, Lyle was weak but beautiful to look at if you could see through his injuries like Athena had. Valentin though, he was handsome in his own way but plain. A big bay, there were many of that color around the lands of Geneva. In all honesty Athena didn't care what color her stallions were, so long as they did what they were told didn't try to escape her. She wasn't here to breed trading stock she was here to become a feared Western mare. She had suffered physically in the South and now she would make her stallions suffer. Though she would not beat them, she didn't want to force stallions, she wanted them to want her. Even if that meant brainwashing them to obey her.
Her ears pricked forward and eyes gazed up, a light ice chilled breeze made the leaves dance. The hardwoods were aflame with the colors of autumn. The evergreens unchanged, still held their summer green. Fall was approaching its end and the cruel winter would be upon the land of Arden sooner than Athena realized. This is the forests of Arden, my dear Valentin. She said as they walked through the forest leaving the meadow just inside her territory behind.
The crimson mare stopped deep inside the territory turning toward her captive. I have a few others here, a mare and her father, and my prize Lyle. A slight grin crossed her maw at the sound of Lyle's name on her lips. She liked him best, a Southern stallion as her slave, she loved it. But Valentin would be her work horse, Hoover was doing a good enough job but he would need more help if Athena wanted to clear the trail deeper into the forest. But for now she would let Val rest and get to know his new home. I will aspect you to work on the trails. But, for now, I will let you settle in. If you are hungry or thirsty I will show you where to find both. She smiles at him, kindly an sweat. But in her eyes there was the hint of fire. Always her mind waiting for some outside source to light the embers and set her soul ablaze.

The vegetation was too dense for the pair to walk in a straight line back to his new mistress's territory. It was so heavily wooded, there were places that he could see the sky through the tree branches. The hard wood trees were obviously some of the oldest of their kind. It was deffinitly strange ground to him. The journey was silent, so he snapped to her attention when she spoke. Though he didn't really know what to say, It was just a statement, so he knew better than to talk. But she was different. Did she want a compliment? This authority figure made him nervous, but that tended to be a common factor in his life. So nothing against this mare that escorted him.
He listened closely to the identities she had listed. He would probably be working alongside the father. The other stallion that she mentioned sounded like her favorite, and was probably receiving some sort of special treatment. That was fine by him, though. He was more than okay with keeping a low profile. He preferred to be able to keep to himself, for interaction made him restless in general. He wasn't for sure about the other female. How much contact would he have with her? Very little, he hoped.
She then began to give him a job description of his work around here. Though, she didn't expect him to start right away. She offered him hospitalities, but Valentin was still slightly anxious. "I'm okay for now." He didn't want to show her weakness. He would have started clearing trails right away if she wanted him to. But inside, his throat was a little dry from the travels he had made.
"But thank you for the offer." The stag finished, he wasn't for sure on what else to say. 302 WORDS

Well then, I will take you around my land. Show you were to find food and drink anyway. Follow me. She turned and walked along the trail they were on. It led deeper into the forest where Athena liked to spend most of her time when she wasn't watching after her stallions or going out to find them. It was darker there, the shadows seemed to haunt you, driving the weak into a frenzy. She glanced back to make sure her slave was following then continued on down the curving path. It was sloppy with dead leaves from past autumn seasons and little if no care. You could hear as Athena's hooves sunk into the soft ground with a sqush with every step.
The deeper they went the quieter and darker it became. Then, like it came from no where the pines cleared and a medium size clearing came into view. The sound of a flowing stream was the only sound here. Athena walked into the open place, the sky above clear. The grass here was light brown from the dry Spring and Summer. But there was a few green patches near the stream. This is my favorite place here. Its not the only place in Arden to find water and food though, there are clearings easier to get to, but I wanted to show you this one. Its where I stay when I'm not guarding the studs or looking for them. She walked a ways into the clearing then turned to Valentin. The trail there is a mess, you can see why it needs work. She nodded her head in the direction of the path they had taken.
Athena walked over to the stream then. It wasn't wide nor deep but it always ran cool and clean. In the coming winter she would have to find a deeper water source as this one would be one of the first to freeze over. She lowered her crown to the water, her maw gently touching the crystal clear liquid. Her eyes caught her own reflection. Brown eyes gazed into each other, fire danced between them. Then she raised her head and turned to study her new slave.

"Yes, Ma'am." Valentin replied almost immediately. It was a reflex. One that had been burnt into his skull ever since he was a colt. He knew that he wasn't suppose to address her so formally, she had told him to just call her by her name. But it's hard to undo five years of training in one day. He hoped she didn't acknowledge his mess up, because he would rather her not be disappointed -or even angry- with him this early on. The stag hadn't even stood in her territory for ten minutes yet.
He continued to follow her down a new trail. No words were exchanged, so he was able to concentrate on the environment that surrounded him. The trees were close together, and encased the path, making their walk slightly claustrophobic. A bit of blue sky could be seen only occasionally through the thick canopy. It was dark now, the stag could only imagine how eyrie it would get on a dully lit night. He already knew that it would be easy for him to get lost, but with his new mistress's guidance, they would arrive at their destination without struggle.
It only took moments for a dense forest to phase out into a clear meadow. The sky was in full view now, allowing the sun rays to warm his shoulders. She spoke in fondness of this specific location. He understood why she enjoyed it so much. It had a calming effect with the serene atmosphere. She broke her statement, only to continue on with an example of her expectations from him. "Yes, of course. I'll make sure and get it done." Valentin said quickly.
There weren't any other stallions around that he could identify, so he was actually curious about one thing. "Where will you want me to stay when I'm not working?" The stag asked her. She must have some specifications.

Hoover Hoover was still working on the trail. It had been at least a week since he first arrived at the land. He had barely seen his daughter, only at night when he was allowed to rest. She didn't say much to him and didn't tell him about her day. Where was the love he had seen when she was a filly? Did all daughters hate their fathers when they were grown? He hated it. He hoped Athena was working on getting him help. He had seen another stallion wandering around, but he seemed sickly. The mare wasn't doing a good job finding work horses. If he had to do it by himself for long he would run away. He would just have to drag his daughter. He stopped to admire his progress. He had been able to make a lot, but you couldn't really tell. It was still a mess. He heard her voice along with a new voice drift over to him. They didn't come into the trail and he couldn't figure out what they were saying, but he could tell the new voice was a stallion. He hoped this one could work and would hurry up and get to it. Surely she would put the new one to work immediately like she did Hoover.
